surah 9 v 108
After answering call of nature, they used water to wash themselves after using stones.
The habit until then was to simply use stones.
Allah mentions them in this verse, saying how he is pleased with them.
The Prophet (sallallahu alaihe wassallam) asked them how they purified themselves and they explained their use of water.
Today we take it for granted. Yet it is actually originated from the people of Quba.

Masjid Dhiraar
Surah 9 V107
This is the case of a mosque built to be a base of mischief and sow disunity among muslims. This mosque was not too far from the Quba mosque.
The Prophet (sallahu alaihi wassallam) ordered the Sahabah Radiallahu anhum to destroy it.
So much was the gravity of this action, that during the time of Umar (radhi allahu anhu), he questioned the Imam of that mosque before appointing him to the Quba mosque.
Only when the Imam explained that he left the mosque once he realised what they were up to, that Umar radhi allahu anhu forgave him.

Ali (radi allahu anhu) accepts Islam at the age of 6
He was living with the Prophet (sallallahu alaihe wassallam).
He saw him praying with Khadijah (radhia allahu anha) and ask about this.
He was invited to Islam and said that he needed to ask his father first.
Overnight he thought about Islam and his father's religion. In the morning he accepted Islam without speaking to his father.
There may be a difference of opinion on this as pointed out in this article

Hypocrites amongst Bedouins
Surah 9 Verse 86
They said something like 'if we go with you, such and such tribe will attack them'.
The Prophet (sallahu alaihi wassallam) would simply accept their excuses, saying something like Allah is sufficient for us.
The Prophet (sallahu alaihi wassallam) had no need for them in his army.
They are likened to women in the next verse and Allah describes their hearts as sealed.
Their hearts are so closed that they really do not understand the gravity of their actions.

Wealth Blessing or Curse?
Surah 9 Verse 75
There is difference of opinion as to whom this is about. Some say is it about Thuleba (radi allahu anhu) but it may not be him as he was of those who fought in Badr, and they are forgiven for whatever they did. So most likely someone else.
This person wants wealth saying he would give alms.
The Prophet sallallahu alaihe wassallam said something to the meaning of 'It is easier to give thanks for little that you have than to give thanks if you have a lot'.
Gradually this person got so much livestock that he had to move out of Madinah. He started missing daily salaat with jamaat, then jummah. He refused zakat when asked.
Verse 79
The hypocrites made fun of those who gave large amounts (saying it is for show) as well as those who gave little (saying something like Does Allah need your little amount?)
Abdur Rahman bin Auf (radhi allahu anhu) is one of those informed of Jannah in this world. He was the wealthiest man at the time. He gave large amounts for charity: he gave 4000 dirhams out of his 8000.
While another Sahabi (radhi allahu anhu) earned 2kg of dates from watering trees all night and gave one kilo in charity. Their contribution was in effect the same given their wealth.
Look at one person who could not cope with wealth and other who was given tidings of jannah in this world.
So it seems that it is a mercy that some people are poor. They would not be as practising if they had wealth.
Sometimes it is a mercy that some people are poor.

Hypocrites - men and women
Surah 9 Verse 67
It is interesting how women hypocrites are mentioned here.
I usually thought of hypocrites as mainly men.
but then again nowadays this is becoming more and more visible.
Verse 68 talks about Allah's curse on them. The curse is that they are not seen when they are punished such that noone feels sorry for them. Usually others will be able to see more severe punishments even in Hell. Those in paradise will also be able to see. So feeling sympathy for them is a kind of solace for them. But for some, no one will even see them.
Verse 70 talks about previous peoples.
Allah did not wrong them, but they wronged themselves. Their actions brought about their own destruction.

Importance of Salaat with Jamaat (Group Prayer)
I recently read articles here
and specially this one.
I now realise that I was not giving group prayer enough importance.
So I pray in group at home with kids/wife and also in masjid.
I also note this article on second jamaats from Hanafi point of view

Can you do Wudu from a cup?
Recently I went to a camping trip to Wales.
The guide showed us how to make wudu from a cup of water, YES, one cup of water.
It puts into perspective how much water we waste when making Wudu in the homes.

Prepare as much as possible then trust in Allah
Surah Tauba verses 38-40
Tabuk expedition , three sahabah( radhi allahu anhum) did not go due
To laziness. It was a time where fruits were almost ready for harvest
The journey was to be long, north of Arabia. Romans fled when they heard of
Muslims coming.
Other verse refers to Prophet sallahu alaihi wassallam with Abu Bakr radhi allahu anhu in the cave thaur.
To go on this trip he prepared every detail in spite of being a prophet, why?
As a prophet he showed the Shariah way.
He chose a different path to Medina than the usual one, he covered his tracks, food was to be brought
by Asma radhi allahu anha.
Allah sent his help, in the form of the bird with its nest, the spider and its web.
In the end, in spite of all their planning, the unbelievers came to the cave, so it came down to trust in Allah.
The Prophet sallahu alaihi wassallam showed us that we need to prepare then trust in Allah. Meticulous preparation and unwavering trust in Allah - what an unbeatable combination!
This shows how important research, education is for Muslims.

Do not be afraid of poverty when following Allah's command
Surah 9 Verse 28
Allah is telling the muslims not to be afraid of loss of business because of the fact that non-Muslims will not be able to come from next year.
If you follow Allah's command he will enrich you.
There is an interesting analogy with this verse to present day situation.
Tourism
Many Muslim countries nowadays 'bend over backwards' to please non-Muslim tourists in the thirst for foreign currency. This is very similar to the situation of the Muslims when they were worried about losing business when non-Muslims were prohibited from Makkah.
Don't lose your faith for worldly gain. Do not allow non-Muslim practices in your country. In the end you will lose your own practice.
Instead of going for tourism, go for education, innovation, technology.
Allah will open a way if you put your mind to it.

UN criticises UK 'rendition role'
Article
There you have it, what we suspected all along.
How many more accusations do we need to hear? But all in the interest of security!
How many wars started in the name of peace?
How many jailed in the name of freedom?
It looks like those who hate our freedoms have won....they have convinced us that we need to lose our own freedoms...how sad!

Don't always go by body count
Article
This interestingly points out that higher casualties of enemy may not necessarily point at winning, but also that there are more of them out there.
Now you would think that give the number of years this has been going on, there would be less of the enemy. So it could be a sign of losing rather than winning.

Marriage Proposals - interesting criteria
I came across this from a sister.
Her requirements are very enlightening, specially the Marriage Contract at the end
An English sister, reverted 2 years ago, age is 20 years is available for marriage proposals. Here is her requirements:
- To have a great love and fear for Allah, so that they will be able to help and guide me in Islam, and that we may in turn help each other in Islam.
- Legal in this country (British resident, Legal Student, or on legal work permit)
- Single, divorced is OK
- Have his family's permission to marry English women
- His age must be 19 to 26, absolute maximum is 27 years.
- Have a job and able to financially support his new family without the need for her to work.
- Want children, because " i would like to have children insha allah I would like to be a 'stay as home wife', looking after the children and being the best wife I can be"
- Able to offer an Islamic accommodation for himself and his wife
- Have Islam as priority over his culture... Any cultural background is OK as long as religion (not culture!) is the main point of reference regarding any family issue.
- Fully read, understand and happily accept the 59 pages on this link

It is not madness it is trust
Surah 8 Verse 49
Those of weak faith and the hypocrites talk of how Islam has made the Muslims run to their death. But Allah says it is not so, it is the trust the Muslims have in Allah that makes them do this.
In Allah should the Muslims place their trust. They will find Allah worthy of their trust.

Iblis at his weakest
Surah 8 Verse 48
Iblis came to Abu Jahl as the leader of one of the tribes that the Quraish were always wary of. This was to give them courage to fight Muslims.
When Iblis came to the battle with his 'soldiers', he saw Jibraeel (alayhis salaam) organising the angels, he realised he had to run. Some scholars say that if angels touched them, they would burn. They did not want to die, so they fled.
This is the only time Iblis looked weak and small in front of man.
When Quraish went to leader to ask him why he fled, he responded that he had never been there.
Iblis even says he fears Allah!

Abu Jahl - pomp and downfall
Surah Anfal Verse 47
Even though Abu Sufyan got his caravan safe, Abu Jahl wanted to make a point of humiliating Muslims. He wanted to go to Badr and have a big celebration, singing, food to strike fear in Muslims and all of Arabia. In the end he tasted not from cups of wine but from cup of death. There was no singing but mourning.
This verse also warns against doing things for show. We should always be sincere in our actions.

Poor, unhappy children in the wealthy nations
Selfish adults 'damage childhood'
Full report - The Good Childhood Inquiry
The report suggests that more working mothers has contributed to damage done to children. The economic independence of women is seen to contribute to higher levels of breakup in UK than other Western European countries.
Too much freedom it seems is not a good thing.
Islam always puts great emphasis on the family unit. Now others can see why.
The problem with the scientific method is that it depends on observation and experimentation for its data. So essentially the problem has to happen first then and only then the solution can be found. So this means that one waits for the problem to happen then we fix it. Prevention is better than cure is not relevant here because there is no data to based the prevention on!
Allah tells us of the best way to live, Allah knows the problems even before they happen. Following the Islamic way prevents us becoming data and statistics for scientists. Because we are not objects, we are human beings.
Now they tell us what they have found. But everyone knows this, it is common sense. But when challenged, we are told we need to research, this is your opinion, where is the basis for your thoughts. In the meantime thousands, millions of children's lives are messed up, while the research is ongoing. Even when the findings are published, there is controversy, disputes. People stuck into the way of living cannot back out. Governments have to listen to electorate. So nothing changes! Children's lives are messed up more, grow into messed up adults and the circle goes on

Tabbatt - Abu Lahab
When Rasullullah(sallallahu alaihe wassallam) gathered the people of Makkah to announce the message, he said something like 'If I were to tell you there was an enemy behind the hill, would you believe me?'
Everyone responded by saying yes, saying he was the trustworthy one.
But when he then gave the message, Abu Lahab used the term 'Tabbatt' to make fun of him, 'Did you gather us here for this?'
So Allah revealed Surah Lahab in response to him, and it also started with the same phrase.
